Announcing Our Collaboration with the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance
The non-profit division of InGenius prep is proud and excited to announce our collaboration with the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance to provide college admissions advice and guidance to participants in urban debate leagues in the greater Dallas area.
As a former debater myself, I am a firm believer in the transformative potential of debate. It was and continues to be the best educational experience of my life. Urban Debate Leagues are organized around the idea that urban debaters are smart and talented students that have vast potential just waiting to be unlocked. By teaching students how to think critically, communicate effectively, and collaborate with team members and even opponents, and by constantly engaging students with frequent opportunities for practice, constructive feedback, and support, Urban Debate Leagues “ignite their passion for learning and empower them to succeed in school, college, and [their] careers.”
Policy Debate is one of the most valuable activities that a student can participate in during high school in order to grow academically and personally. In many respects, it is the ultimate “candidacy-building” activity. Moreover, many colleges recruit debaters just as they do athletes. And, the ones that don’t recruit directly can often write recommendations on your behalf to the admissions office. At very least, many admissions readers understand the intellectual demands and rewards of policy debate.
the Dean of Admissions at Emory has frequently declared that secondary students coming into the Emory admissions pool with 4 years of policy debate experience are presumed to have graduate level research skills. Melissa Maxcy Wade, Director of Forensics at Emory University
Members of the InGenius team will work directly with promising students from the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance to help them through the challenging process of applying to college. We will also work with younger students to get them to focus on standardized tests and building the candidacy well before the application stage. InGenius is donating more than $8,000 in services to the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance this semester alone and plans on expanding the collaboration as quickly as possible. For those students that we are not working with directly, we have created a special weekly blog hosted on the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance website with admissions tips and advice.
